I bought the 20-bit reincarnation (1999 mix in the Rubinstein collection) of this recording just two months before the release of the SACD version, so I had to compare them. The SACD is better. It is smoother and warmer than the 20-bit version. More importantly, the SACD is also CHEAPER! It's hard to beat Rubinstein's interpretation of the Ballades. These must be incredibly difficult to play and interpret well. It is easy to over interpret them. I have Wild's, Zimerman's, Perahia's, amongst others. Rubinstein's seems to be the one that is just about right...not overdone..not too fast... etc. I strongly recommend this SACD for anyone who loves Chopin.

06.Scherzo Nr. 2 b-moll op. 3109:46
07.Scherzo Nr. 3 cis-moll op. 3907:17
08.Scherzo Nr. 4 E-dur op. 5410:58

Starting with Ballade no.1 I thought Perahia was even more dramatic and was thinking well Rubenstein was born in 1887 so was over 70 when he made these recordings. Well straight on to number 2 and he was even more fiery than Perahia in the tempestuous outer sections!
Everyone will have favourite recordings (Perahia in the Ballades, Richter or Arrau in the Scherzi)but the more you listen to Rubenstein the more you understand his reputation as a Chopin magician.
The only tempo I would quibble with is the beautiful slow section in the middle of the First Scherzi (based if I recall correctly on an old Polish carol?)- I wish it was even slower.
The piano has a big, bold sound though it is slighlty clattery and of course doesn't have the depth and resonance of a modern DSD recording.

The Stockholm City Hall is known around the world for housing the Nobel prize banquet.
It is also home to the largest organ in Scandinavia.
On this spectacular instrument, with its 10 000 pipes, Mattias Wager plays French music from the Thirties. The music, by Alain, Jolivet, Bonnal and Duruflé shows the scope and sheer creativity of its time, and its feeling of boundless musical possibilities. With its wealth of sound, the City Hall organ is one of the few instruments that make it possible to really bring out all the colors in this repertoire.
I think we have been able to catch the sounds of the organ and the feeling of this very spacious hall!

(SACD-HYBRID) Hymne a l'univers is the newest album on Opus 3 Records from acclaimed organist Mattias Wager, whose previous release on Opus 3 Records was the best-selling album entitled Organ Treasures. Mattias also performed on the previous Opus 3 Records releases Live at Vatnajökull, and played on a couple of the Erik Westberg choir albums! The Stockholm City Hall is known around the world for housing the Nobel prize banquet. It is also home to the largest organ in Scandinavia. On this spectacular instrument, with its 10,400 pipes, Mattias Wager plays French music from the Thirties. With its wealth of sound, the Stockholm City Hall organ is one of the few instruments that make it possible to really bring out all the colors in this repertoire. Additionally this is the first real recording of this organ, even though it was built in 1926, 3 years after the Stockholm City Hall was opened to the public. Released on Sony's stereo SACD format this album has outstanding sound quality. This Hybrid SACD is playable on all CD Players.
To the Listener
The choice of repertoire on this CD may seem surprising to some. Why French repertoire from the Thirties on a huge, late Romantic organ from a German builder, rebuilt by a contemporary English firm?
The answer lies in the changing winds in organ building around 1925 when the City Hall organ was originally constructed by the firm Walcker of Ludwigsburg, Germany. The concept of a huge, orchestral organ was slowly beginning to incorporate elements of the latest Neo-classical trends, with the inclusion of choruses of small reeds, mutation stops and mixtures. The result in the case of the City Hall was an instrument of incredible versatility. It combines a rich palette of foundation stops of all nuances with registrations that enable the most delicate clarity of sound.
The latest renovation, carried out by organ builders Harrison of Durham, England, has greatly improved the technical buildup of the organ and has given the organ a quick and responsive action. In addition to all this, the wounderful acoustic of the City Hall gives to the organ sound great space and reverberation, without disturbing echo... Mattias Wager

Performance:  Sonics (MC):
Respighi’s ballet La Pentola Magica (The Magic Pot – mis-translated on the first page of the booklet as Plot!) and dating from 1920 is the only purely orchestral item here, but anyone expecting another Boutique Fantasque will be sadly disappointed.
The piece consists of twelve short movements that are arrangements by Respighi of works by minor Russian composers, including Rubinstein, Grechaninov and Arensky, as well as folktunes and is in some respects a tribute to Rimsky-Korsakov his teacher at the time. As one might expect, it is quite melodic and beautifully orchestrated, but regrettably can appear fairly unmemorable. It certainly needs a stronger advocacy than it receives here from Marzio Conti and the Orchestra Sinfonica del Teatro Massimo di Palermo who give a performance that sounds dutiful rather than enthusiastic (the RBCD on Chandos by Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic is in a different league altogether).
The ballet is framed by two of Respighi’s settings of poems by Shelley for mezzo-soprano and orchestra (Il Tramonto being the third).
Respighi’s setting of La Sensitiva (The Sensitive Plant) is quite ravishing and its melodic invention makes up for what was lacking in La Pentola Magica. In this piece Respighi’s inspiration never falters but it presents quite a challenge for the soloist who has to sustain an almost unbroken line of beautiful tone throughout its 31 minutes and at the same time bring the imagery of the poem to life. Damiana Pinti, while not matching Janet Baker’s incomparable performance on CD, achieves this with some success and both Conti and the orchestra too revel in the exquisite orchestral colours.
Aretusa tells the story of Arethusa, a water nymph, who ran from a suitor, Alpheus, a river god, and made her way to the isle of Ortygia in Syracuse, in Sicily. She called on Artemis, who helped her by changing her into a fountain. Undaunted, Alpheus diverted his river underground, mingling his waters with hers. It is most fitting that it is performed here by a Sicilian orchestra.
In this shorter (12m) piece, Respighi sets the words of the poem to imaginative and dramatic music, this time suggesting water and the swell of the ocean. Once again Damiana Pinti rises to the challenge, only occasionally pushing her youthful sounding voice a little too hard.
The recording, though clear and with a wide dynamic range, is far too close. This produces, at times, overbearing brass and is not kind to the strings, which can sound shrill. A pity.
Surround channels are limited to ambience, which certainly helps reduce the claustrophobic image.

Site review by mwagner1962 October 3, 2006
Performance:  Sonics (S):
I bought this SACD as it features three pieces of Respighi that I was totally unfamiliar with. Most have heard Respighi's more famous pieces like Pines of Rome and Roman Festivals, so these selections were somewhat tantalizing.
All three are classified as tone poems, with the two outer selections being compositions for mezzo soprano and orchestra and the middle selection (the title of the album) is purely orchestral.
The first selection, La Sensitiva (The Sensitive Plant) really has not specific themes, other than what I perceive to be pure melancholy. This to me is a very nice piece and I cannot understand why it has languished in obscurity for so long.
La Pentola Magica was actually scored for a ballet at the request of Diaghilev. The plot (explained in the booklet) is mildly entertaining, dealing with a spoiled little girl, daughter of a Czar. The plot is not important, the music however, IS important. Of all three compositions, this one alone gives the best taste of Respighi.
Aretusa is the final selection, and is based on Greek myths recorded in the Metamorphoses of Ovid. Once again, the music is very nice and very typical of Respighi.
While the music is excellent (though not as thrilling as the later "Roman Trilogy", it is still nice to have these selections recorded!!!
I have come to really like the sound of CPO recordings. However, this recording is simply not quite up to the normal standards I have come to expect, especially compared to the Weignartner symphonies with Letonja. The sound is at times somewhat murky, especially on the loud orchestral tuttis. When the music get soft, I can get a nice sense of space, but that feeling of space quickly disappears when the brass enter....then the sounds gets really close. Sometimes the recording has a nice warm feel, then other times it is z tad cool. Oh well, this does not wreck the recording...it just lowers the ratings a bit
Not the best sounding CPO, but still a worthy addition to the library of those who love Respighi!!

The rhetorical fundamental gestures which characterise the instrumental compositions of the 16th and 17th centuries are shown most impressively in the echo and response dialogues of spatially separated choirs. At St. Mark’s in Venice, where several musicians’ galleries were available, this multi-choir format reached a highpoint with Giovanni Gabrieli towards the end of the sixteenth century and gained stylistic influence well beyond Italy. The majority of works included in this recording date from the 20s and 30s of the seicento, when composers enjoyed their newfound means of expression and freedom all the more. This music is characterized by exuberant virtuosity and joy of playing, as well as a programmatic accentuation of the then modern style.
The four galleries of the Abbey Church of Muri offer optimal conditions for multi-choral music. So as to include the historical organs of the church, two cornettos were produced whose pitch exactly matches that of the Bossard organs of the Abbey Church of Muri. The present recording is the first sound documentation of this essential musical practice of the Abbey Church of Muri.

Producer’s note:
After the wave of critical and public approval and the swelling of satisfaction on our part (the two only peripherally connected) that followed “Tango: Zero Hour”, Malvi and I bet Astor that he couldn’t come up with a new music that was even more beautiful, more passionate and more complex (honest?) than the Magnus Opum. Unnerved and sneering at the challenge (as always), he came up with “La Camorra” suite, which in many ways was an even more spectacular and transcendental piece than we had even hoped for. Although more mercurial (like it’s creator) than TANGO: ZERO HOUR, it more than satisfied the terms of the bet in dealing with beauty, passion and complexity, while relentlessly shifting and gaining in intensity. It also continued, maybe fulfilled, the Piazzolla incline of The Rough Dancer... pointed out by Fernando Gonzalez, playing with and against tango form, making references to tango passed and tango future, and to Piazzolla’s own past and (possible) future, with direct references to bandoneon players that influenced his understanding of the instrument, and of tango itself, while transcending them. Wow! For some reason, probably because it was eclipsed by the continuing (and justified) attention still being given to TANGO: ZERO HOUR, this piece, and this recording, which many of us who were close to him consider to be perhaps his best recording, the best half hour of Piazzolla recorded, got lost and was never given the prominent place it deserved. If fortune has any sense of balance, this record... Oh, fuck, if fortune had any sense of balance, so many things would be different. Right?

Another of the series of EVEREST recordings done in London with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting the London Symphony in this event performing a couple of old war horses in Pictures and Night on Bald Mountain. To say these are definitive performances would be overstating the case, however, They are perfectly executed if at a bit slower pace than others - notably the Reiner / CSO on RCA. Rene Leibowitz's performances on Power of the Orchestra (RCA VCS 2659) have been the sonic standards for many years but the Everest takes the sonics that make these pieces sing to a new level of reality - you can for a moment actually believe you are in the Hall. It takes a certain majesty to pull off full orchestra reality in the home environment and this recording comes as close as possible to fully achieving that effortless sense of size necessary to do so. Bert Whyte is again at the controls for another outstanding EVEREST 35 mm recording at London's famed Walthamstow Assembly Hall - the same hall used extensively by the Decca and Kenneth Wilkinson. The HDAD PLUS which is a TWO disc set consisting of a two sided DVD-10 disc containing DVD Audio and DVD Video formats PLUS a bonus CD from a separate 16 bit / 44.1 kHz two channel capture done simultaneously for the CD format to avoid non-integer down sampling and hence provide for maximum quality for the CD all transferred DIRECTLY FROM THE 35mm MAGNETIC FILM using a vintage Westrex 1551 tape machine, with specially built playback electronics that are vastly superior to any others used on these machines to playback the original 35mm tapes. The Len Horowitz / History of Recorded Sound specially modified 1551, fitted with brand new playback heads matched to the revolutionary playback electronics was stationed at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. With Len Horowitz running the playback machine and Bernie Grundman mastering from the three track 35mm tapes, Classic Records has been able to capture the legendary sound and performances DIRECTLY FROM THE 35mm MAGNETIC FILM through an "ALL TUBE" tape playback system and at 24 bit resolution and 192 kHz sampling rate for use in both the two and three channel presentations included on both the DVD Audio and DVD Video sides of the two sided DVD-10. The level of detail and dynamics on these discs are not for mediocre systems - be prepared to give your hi-fi a real workout!

Piazzolla... the man who invigorated the Tango Porteño with his Nuevo Tango idea...
Take the lyricism of the tango, a music born in the whorehouses of the Argentinian port, almost at the same time as jazz was born in New Orleans, then add it to circle-of-fifths chord progressions reminicent of Vivaldi, spiced with the extended harmonies of jazz, and finally, the learned counterpoint of a Boulanger student, who can almost do the Rachmaninovian trick of extending melodies and cadences, while still creating sad melodies in a typical tango idiom, that have lovely melodic surprises at almost every turn...
That sort of begins to describe the music of Ástor Piazzolla.
This disc has been playing in my home, with its 5.0 sonics, for days. It is simply LOVELY!!!
Yes, the sound is typical of a radio station studio and there are NO concert-hall acoustics here, but the playing sings and all the musicians have the style and spirit of this music in an astonishing way!!!
There are a few other Piazzolla discs on SACD that completely get the notes and miss the style. In tango, like in flamenco, proper style and rubato is indispensable.
THIS DISC IS A KEEPER!!! GET IT!!!

Performance:  Sonics:
Great recording with excellent sonic performance in 5.1 multi-channel audio. Music
is performed with excellent skills and emotional interperetation.
To be highly recommended. I did not know that we have this kind of multi-channel
recording expertise in Finland.
Listen to the sound of oboe at the beginning of Oblivion ... this is where
multi-channel audio is at its best. Vocals and solo instruments located in
front of you cannot be reproduced like this with stereo playback. And this
is not just golden-eared listener's imagination but the natural ambience is
reproduced here.
Long live multi-channel audio!

This final volume in a complete set, begun ten years ago by Alpha, presents the last of the major works composed for large instrumental forces by J. S. Bach. It includes the pastoral colours of the horns and oboes in the First Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1046, his Harpsichord Concerto in A major BWV 1053, the fine Orchestral Suite no. 4 in D major BWV 1069, and finally, bringing the set to a close, the marvellous Concerto for four harpsichords in A minor BWV 1065.
This series has become a reference for these works by Bach, and each volume has received the highest distinctions both in France and abroad.

5.0 out of 5 stars More excellent perfomances by Cafe Zimmermann May 11, 2012
Very fine performances. They have a more energetic approach than Hogwood, more elegant nuances and phrasing than Pinnock, and are less relentlessly driven than the MAK (Musica Antigua Koln). (Although the Brandenburg #1 does move along a bit quickly for the valveless horns to avoid an undignified scramble.)...
