Take the cat off the hook and throw out the phone – you won’t want to be disturbed for the next two and a half hours. Why? Because this is an organ collection like no other, magnificently played on the new Goll instrument at St Martin, Memmingen. And if you think you know your Franck be prepared for a surprise – these performances are nothing short of revelatory...
....This isn’t the first time the fabulous Goll organ has been committed to disc; Ross has recorded a mixed programme for IFO (IFO45), Ulfert Smidt has taped some Franck and Langlais for MDG (MDG 90614) and Jane Parker Smith plays an eclectic mix of pieces for Avie (AVI-34). I have yet to these but I’d be very surprised if they come even close to the sonic and musical splendour of this Audite release.
And of course there are two more instalments in this series – Audite 91.519 and 91.520 – which, if Volume I is anything to go by, must make this the finest and most satisfying survey now before the public. One hesitates to use the word ‘great’ but in this case nothing else will do.

Gesamteinspielung der Orgelwerke Cesar Francks erhält den "Super sonic" Die Internationale Musikzeitschrift "pizzikato" hat die Einspielung des gesamten Orgelwerks von Cesar Frank (1822-1890) durch den Memminger Kirchenmusikdirektor Hans-Eberhard Roß mit der Verleihung des Preises "Super sonic" gewürdigt. Die weltweit erste Gesamteinspielung aller Orgel- und Harmoniumwerke des französischen Romantikers, die an der neuen Goll-Orgel der hostorischen Memminger Stadtkirche St. Martin, entstand, ist im Detmolder Label "audite" erschienen. Die sechs CDs werden unter dem Motto "Rendevous mit Cesar Frank" am 19. März in der St. Martinskirche der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt.

The second volume in this series is no less successful than César Franck: Complete Organ Works Vol. 1 - Hans-Eberhard Ross.
As before, the music is played on the wonderful Goll Organ of St. Martin, Memmingen and the second volume is subtitled "Unrecognised greatness". Here the L'Organiste II (from which the "Pièces posthumes pour Harmonium ou Orgue á pèdales pour l'office ordinaire" are drawn) are split across the two discs, together with 4 other similar scale works as well as the third version of the Fantaisie in C and the Trois Pièces Pour Grand Orgue.
L'Organiste II is a set of works written for a former pupil of Franck who left the big city to work as a village organist. The 43 (mainly) miniatures that comprise L'Organiste II are on the whole small scale and not of lasting interest to most listeners. However, there are a few more substantial parts that repay repeated hearing and illustrate the respect that Franck held for the post of church organist - oh that all players would employ music of this quality today. The other miniature pieces that were originally conceived for harmonium but like L'Organiste II and they have been transposed (in a very similar and convincing way) by Hans-Eberhard Roß. Throughout, Roß plays with absolute dedication and conviction that many would not bring to such "trivial" works.
The Trois Pièces are, of course, conceived on a wholly different scale and Roß responds in kind. He brings out the Tristan-like qualities of the Fantaisie as well as delivering a very satisfying reading of the Pièce Héroïque indeed.
Just as in the first volume, the acoustic of the Memmingen church is very fine for the purpose - not cloudy nor dry and the Audite team capture the reedy timbre of the Goll instrument with a care rarely heard in organ discs so far on SACD.
Even though this is very fine playing and recording, this cannot be recommended for those other than those who seek a complete collection or devoted organ music fans.

This follow-up to Volume 1, subtitled Unrecognized Greatness, is a collection of works whose importance, until today, has mostly remained unrecognized. The collection was originally calledPieces posthumes pour Harmonium ou Orgue a pedales pour l'office ordinaire, which Franck's son Georges had published by Enoch in Paris in 1905. In 1935 Charles Tournemire published a selection of these works under the title L'Organiste II. It is in this version that they remain in circulation today. One hundred years later this recording takes us back to the original music, presenting it for the first time in its complete and original form. After all, Tournemire had cut 14 pieces and changed some of the remaining ones drastically. Although the title suggests a realization by either organ or harmonium, this music is nevertheless nothing else but organ repertoire. The 1905 edition contains an interesting comment from Georges Franck. A former pupil of Franck's, who was working in the country, had apparently asked the master for guidance as to how he should use his village organ. … The performances by I Virtuosi delle Muse, directed by Molardi from the harpsichord, are superb. Most notable are the ensemble’s rich but subtly graded palette of colours (to accord with Charles de Brosses’ enthusiastic observations after hearing Vivaldi and his orchestra in Venice), rhythmic vitality and atmospheric renditions of the slow movements. This last quality is enhanced by the surprising appearance of the viola d’amore among the strings, which Molardi believes often participated in 17th- and 18th- century Venetian orchestral ensembles.

Vivaldi claimed to have written 94 operas, few of which are performed at present, and even fewer recorded. As a sort of consolation prize, Swiss company Divox Antiqua offer this disc of sinfonias from the operas. The sinfonie was a baroque orchestral form, usually in three movements (fast, slow, fast) which was used to introduce an opera or be interpolated between acts. The sinfonia was also the parent of the concerto and later the four movement classical symphony.
In these works, Vivaldi set himself the task of setting a location, such as Ancient Greece, Persia and Damascus during the Crusades, or an atmosphere - pastoral, ceremonial or even a battle with clashing swords. Even though Baroque opera was primarily about the voice, the 'Red Priest' put a great deal of effort and amazing originality into these short pieces, and although there are a few borrowings from other works (such as the last movement of Spring from the Four Seasons), the music is of very high quality and certainly keeps the interest alive throughout this disc.
A feature of this disc is the use of the Viola d'amore, which is a 6-stringed fiddle with 6 other strings behind the fingerboard which are allowed to resonate. It has a warm and lyrical sound as its name would suggest, and often featured as a solo instrument in concertos, favoured by JS Bach as well as Vivaldi. Research by conductor Stefan Molardi revealed that a surprising number of these instruments were produced by the finest fiddle makers, far more than could be accounted for by solos in concertos. Iconographic work also supported his conclusion that the viola d'amore was frequently used in orchestras. On this disc, if features predominantly in the andante movements.
Founded in 2003, I Virtuosi delle Muse are a small band of period string players, including a continuo of a double bass (quite a new instrument in the early C18th), and chitarrone or theorbo. All of them have played in other well-known Italian period orchestras such as I Barocchisti. Their style is exuberant - the virtuosic fiery allegros come right out of the speakers like a terrier snapping at your heels. Andantes, however, are gentle and beautifully shaded. Quite stunning playing, with a very well-defined and well recorded continuo - the heartbeat of Baroque music.
The 6 channel 96/24 PCM recording was made in the Casa Raphael in Roncegno, Italy, a room of appropriate size for this music. It is very detailed, immediate but with bloom around the upper strings and has excellent bass. It is in the 2-2-2 system (where the centre and subwoofer channels are used to feed speakers at some height above the front left and right ones). It works perfectly well in my 5.1 system without re-arrangment.
A sunny disc, therefore, which gave me a thrilling and highly enjoyable sonic feast. Recommended.

… I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed their renderings of Le sinfonie. They are dramatic and well executed, if not over the top, like some Italian recordings I've had to suffer! The sound of the band varies from track to track, to suit the music (and, suggests the booklet, the theme of the opera with which each is associated, though I take that with a large pinch of salt). Clearly, I Virtuosi delle Muse are a group to watch, and Divox Antiqua should be justly happy to have signed them up

Antonio Vivaldi : Opernouvertüren :Nie gehörtes aus der Feder Vivaldis findet sich auf dieser CD – aber das ist noch nicht einmal das Interessanteste. Sondern der Orchesterklang, den die Virtuosi delle Muse für Vivaldi finden. Angelehnt an Berichte von Zeitgenossen über das Spiel Vivaldis zu seiner Zeit interpretieren die Barockspezialisten die Opernouvertüren, mit großer Freiheit, feinen dynamischen Differenzierungen und mit einem neuen Klang, der nicht zuletzt durch die Verwendung der Viola d’amore als Orchesterinstrument zustande kommt.
