Performance:  Sonics (S/MC): /
This is actually quite good, especially considering the age of the master tapes.
One big quibble, Fiedler had some ungodly rule against saxophones and the Gayaneh Sabre Dance has NO sax in it. Instead violas and cellos double each other in octaves. Also, the performances are the typical impersonal thing that happens when orchestras think they are playing second-rate music. So, in the Lullaby, which is one of the loveliest things that the composer ever wrote (do not miss the Stokowski recording with Chicago of the 3rd Symphony on RCA!!!), the phrases don't add up to a line.
Otherwise, the performances are in the usual Boston Pops/Fiedler mode, FAST and slapdash. Yes, there is some sloppy playing, but we can hear it better with the SACD mastering...

Much of Arthur Fiedler’s fifty-plus year output had a, well, “pops” kind of presentation, and despite his penchant for more “light” classical fare, he was nonetheless a superb conductor with a vast musical repertory. This disc of all-Russian orchestral showstoppers is characteristic of his work, and is presented for the first time in its original three-channel sound. Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia and his Polovtsian Dances are among the big hits here, also music from Khachaturian’s Gayne and Masquerade ballets, and super-pop hits such as Flight of the Bumblebee. Soundwise, all the performances hearken back to the golden age of early stereo. Unfortunately, most of the selections are perhaps not given the most idiomatic readings they may have ever received; more involving readings of the Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Khachaturian pieces can be found on several Mercury Living Presence recordings led by Antal Dorati (some are even available on SACD). Pretty much a mixed bag here – you may want to try it if possible before you buy it.

Performance:  Sonics (S/MC): /
It is tempting to write off as pedestrian a disc that features performances of the ubiquitous "Rhapsody in Blue" and "American in Paris". But pedestrian this disc is not, either for sound or for performances.
There is so much to marvel about here. By the early 60's (6 or 7 years after it’s initial stereo recordings) RCA had just about made the transition from mono and was producing it very best stereo to that point. The music and the production is top tier even by today’s best, especially the 3-channel layer. Regarding the production, the depth and soundstage are suspended in such a way that the music rarely, if ever, gives the speakers away, even in the light of day. This is truly extraordinary given the vintage of the recordings when the "ping pong" phenomenon that blatantly spot lit the 2 stereo speakers was still the presentation of choice among many labels.
I'm no Gershwin expert but the performances of all 5 compositions, nearly 80 minutes worth, really excite me. "Rhapsody in Blue" and "American in Paris" are anything but sway-backed warhorses here. The performances are fresh and exhilarating. And the "Concerto in F", which I had heard before but not really listened to, was a wonderful find. I enjoyed pianist Earl Wild, so much so that when I first bought the disc I looked him up on the web fully to read his biography, expecting something like "he was born xxxx and died xxxx" (as what is usually the case with recordings of this vintage). Hey at 90+ he is alive and kickin’ (last time I checked) and still giving recitals!
The sound is great is either two-channel or three channel.
A lot of bang for the buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect antidote for classical (and audio) snobbery May 18, 2008
By Lawrence A. SchenbeckAmazon Verified Purchase
Attention all music snobs! This SACD is just what you need to clean out your ears, and your soul. I just finished listening to it after spending a dispiriting morning with a 2004 multichannel release of a major, very serious violin concerto from a major label, major soloist, major orchestra and conductor. On that disc, tepid music-making, oh-so-careful recording and mastering. Oh so boring.
Now here's the real thing. Made back when people enjoyed making and hearing "light classics" -- and it really shows. Although I'm a boomer, I was not familiar with earlier iterations of this famous Boston Pops recording. Therefore I can't comment on whether it's as good as this remastering or that original shaded dog or whatever.
All I can say is, wow! This three-channel SACD really hits the spot. The pianist, Earl Wild, is probably unmatched in this repertoire. The orchestra, under its founding conductor, plays with matching exuberance. Everyone seems to be having a ball, first measure to last. When's the last time you heard a classical recording like that?
The recorded sound is open, colorful, engaging, and totally persuasive. Sure, the soloist is brightly lit, and there's a bit of suspect reverb. But I can hear the hall, the imaging is pretty good, and it's just so involving! Bless you, Richard Mohr and Lewis Layton and all the rest. Why can't they make 'em like this anymore?
So, unconditionally recommended. Once you've heard this, you can go back to your Magnus Lindberg or Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach or Pierre Boulez or 13th-century Moldavian motets or whatever and feel like one of the few, the precious few again. But at least you will have had some fun.
I have enjoyed many of the Living Stereo SACD remasterings, but this one is quite special.

...Five stars. Is that enough? Hardly. This disc and its companion are simply among the true peaks in the mountain ranges of the history of recorded music. They may be equaled, but probably will never be bettered. Very highly recommended. Indeed
Remember the brief, good old days of quad? Various labels, Vox included, were experimenting with ways to get four channel sound out of the long-playing vinyl platter. I believe the old USA RCA label had a discrete four channel system that actually cut four separate channels into the otherwise 2-sided LP groove. This meant you had to have a special cartridge/needle combo to safely ride and reproduce the four tracks cut into the groove. Never took off. Others, EMI and Vox among them choose the matrixed sound path, rather like the ways FM radio was matrixing a stereo signal into its carrier waves, so that your home receiver could decode it down to two channels in your home...

We have here another of the audiophile-favored recording projects of the Joanna Nickrenz and Marc J. Aubort team for Vox Records. The original LP was released in l975 and it was a QS quadraphonic
disc. Actually it must have been two discs because the length of this program would never fit on the two sides of a single LP – the Mother Goose Suite alone is a half hour length. Mo-Fi’s mastering
expert Paul Stubblebine used their Gain 2 System, which stands for Greater Ambient Information Network and includes both a custom analog tape playback system and custom A-to-D converter and input rivers... audaud.com

I’ll start with the best of the bunch so far - the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3 with Byron Janis, and Antal Dorati conducting the London and Minneapolis Symphonies. Though one of the other Byron Janis Mercuries utilized their 35mm film recording technique, this one used tape, but it is probably the most exciting version both sonically and performance-wise one could possibly expect of both concertos. I had two other SACDs of the Third Concerto plus two of the Second. Volodos brought in a very exciting and virtuosic performance of the Third on a Sony Classical stereo SACD, but the sound was quite distant and way too wide a spread of the piano sound - in fact it sounds like two pianos, and there is no middle to the soundstage at all... audaud.com

The first thing that will strike you when listening to this recording is its huge dynamic range. The opening bars of 'Daphnis and Chloe' (recorded in September 2009) emerge almost imperceptibly from inky black silence, and you may be tempted to immediately increase the volume setting, but beware, because as the music of the introduction rises to its climax (around 2'28”) the sound expands hugely, with the LSO trumpets cutting thrillingly through the massive orchestral and choral texture. Nevertheless this disc does need to be played at a high level to achieve the most realistic sound from it.
Throughout this recording the Classic Sound team of Jonathan Stokes and Neil Hutchinson have managed to capture every detail of Ravel's glittering score in a way that one would not have believed possible, given the well-known sonic limitations of the Barbican acoustic.
Of course, much of the credit for the illumination of orchestral detail must also be given to Valery Gergiev who manages to achieve superb balances between every sections of his marvellous orchestra. One might be forgiven for imagining that Gergiev would be a conductor who would not respond naturally to Ravel's sensuous and erotic score with much sensitivity, but that is definitely not the case. His performance is beautifully attuned to the ebb and flow of the ballet and most successfully combines a relaxed gentleness in the more reflective sections with terrific muscular drive and energy elsewhere. The LSO perform with their customary virtuosity and it is good to be able to hear the wordless choral sections delivered with such accuracy and enthusiasm by the LSO Chorus.
The two works that fill up this disc, 'Pavane pour une infante défunte' and 'Bolero',were recorded in December 2009 at a different concert from that of the Daphnis and Chloe'.
Gergiev's 'Pavane', though exquisitely played, could have benefited from little more forward momentum such as that demonstrated by the incomparable Pierre Monteux on his 1961 recording of it with this same orchestra. However, the ubiquitous 'Bolero' proves to be a real winner. Though Gergiev's steady and relentless pace does imbue the piece with an almost militaristic quality, he does temper that by allowing a modicum of freedom and flexibility to his players. The laid-back saxophone playing and amusingly louche solo trombone certainly give this 'Bolero' an engaging character and welcome individuality.
This disc is an unexpected success and, even amongst the many available alternatives of these works, is highly recommended.

'the work [Daphnis and Chloe] is in the orchestra's blood. Valery Gergiev's combination of attention to detail and grasp of long-term architecture allied to a splendid surround sound recording make this a very enticing prospect. The strings sweep and swoon magnificently, the numerous woodwind solos are rarely less than sublime, while the brass manage both statuesque mobility in the panoramic vistas, and bracing punch in the general dances, ably supported by crackling percussion' BBC Music Magazine (UK)
'Gergiev generates a frisson in everything he conducts ... This Daphnis with the London Symphony Orchestra has everything one could want – atmosphere, languor, superb wind playing. Gergiev generates more high-voltage drama than rival versions' Financial Times (UK)
'Gergiev certainly adds to his laurels with a fantastic conducting job here - bringing out the color and dynamics while highlighting every small detail. With his control of the orchestra he makes every bar a real event' Audiophile Audition (US)
'The most striking thing about these fine performances is their seductive combination of tonal warmth and sparkling virtuoso finesse ... Gergiev conjures up an intoxicatingly languorous soundworld' Classic FM Magazine(UK)

‘There is mystery and wonder in almost every bar ... This release is a triumph for Gergiev and the incomparable London Symphony. Bravo!’ American Record Guide (USA)

'Those like me who enjoyed this conductor's Romeo & Juliet will not be disappointed with this new recording... the orchestral detail is impressive throughout... highly recommended' Fanfare (US)

If you were wondering which SACD recording of the Four Seasons to buy, or if you are a Rocker and think Music by Dead Guys is vaguely suited to funerals, or if you want to convince a potential mate that you have descriminating taste, or if you want to convince your present mate that all those dollars spent on SACD stuff are a worthwhile investment, or if you want to convince a friend that his/her CDs are So-Last-Century, or even if the latest medical tests indicate a potentially serious problem, then stop your fretting and buy and play this heaven-sent recording. From the first moment that the sound appears, you will understand: it's like chocolate, it's like 20 year-old scotch, maybe like Tiajuana Gold. Name your passion, it's what the Doctor ordered. Thirty-two of thirty-two SA-CD.net users agree: this is what ears are all about.
A note or two on the music:
Vivaldi hasn't always been with us. Or rather, he has been shoved into the back ranks of obscurity by such notables as J.S. Bach, who appreciated Vivaldi enough to pass off at least 10 Vivaldi works more or less as his own (copyright? what's that?). Antonio, il prete rosso, died in penury and lawsuits, and wasn't rehabilitated and hoisted into the firmament of Greats till after WWII. Like Indiana Jones, Alberto Gentili stumbled upon a treasure-trove of original mss in the 1920s, but everything had to wait while WWII rippled across Europe and Asia. Then in 1947, Casa Ricordi began publishing EVERYTHING, ably edited by one Gian Francesco Malpiero (who moonlighed as a composer in his own right).
It is remarkable that Vivaldi's works are of a musical calibre to attract the borrowing instincts of Bach, since the works were written for... schoolgirls, the nominal orphans of the orphanage where Antonio laboured to keep them in music, instruments and tune. If you have the good fortune to attend a good live production of any of his concerti, you will be astonished that such a rich tapestry of sound is woven by a quite modest number of players (unless, of course, you have the misfortune to watch an oversized orchestra try to waddle through the numbers). I say 'any' concerto, for they are all of a quality, high quality, makeing their sorting into 'periods' virtually impossible. The famous Seasons count for only 4 of Vivaldi's 600 or so concerti.
Arte dei suonatori -- Italian for Art of the ?Sonata -- are Polish. And new to me, but be warned: Move over Academy of St Martins-in-the-Fields! Rachel Podger is a young German who's been hanging 'round with Pinnock and the English Consort for most of the last decade. If you have been kissing a photo of Julia Fischer good-night each night, then by all means acquire a photo of Ms Podger as well. My own personal preference is for Podger's warm understatement, rather than Fischer's mathematical purity (fighting words?).

Biography

RACHEL PODGER Baroque Violin / Director
Instrument: Pesarinius Genoa, 1739

Rachel Podger is one of the most creative talents to emerge in the field of period performance. Over the last two decades she has established herself as a leading interpreter of the music of the Baroque and Classical periods and holds numerous recordings to her name, ranging from early seventeenth century music to Mozart and Haydn. She was educated in Germany and in England at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied with David Takeno and Micaela Comberti.
After beginnings with The Palladian Ensemble and Florilegium, she was leader of The English Concert from 1997 to 2002. In 2004 Rachel began a guest directorship with The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, recording Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with violist Pavlo Beznosiuk, as well as 2 Haydn Violin Concertos. She plays a Stradivari violin on this recording which was generously loaned by the Royal Academy of Music. Other highlights in this collaboration have been concert tours in Europe and the USA and a televised concert at the BBC Proms in 2007. Over the years Rachel has enjoyed numerous collaborations as guest director and soloist with orchestras all over the world; projects special to her have been those with Arte dei Suonatori (Poland), Musica Angelica and Santa Fe Pro Musica (USA), the Academy of Ancient Music, the European Union Baroque Orchestra, Holland Baroque Society and the Handel & Haydn Society (USA). 2012 sees Rachel guest directing in Canada, with Arion in Montreal and Tafelmusik in Toronto, as well as curating a Bach Festival in Tokyo, performing the six solo Sonatas & Partitas and the violin concertos with Brecon Baroque.

Don't let the "PCM" source scare you. The booklet says the original recording was 96k/24-bit, and it sounds hi-rez all the way. The dynamics, especially in the pianissimo end of the scale, are amazing. The violin sounds warm and blends into the sonic landscape of the orchestra better than some other works I've heard on "all DSD" recordings.
If you're not familiar with this particular Beethoven piece, it has a rather "modern" 5-note motif that is initially startling, sounding (to my untrained ear) out-of-place in a romantic work. But the as the composer returns to this phrase, he weaves it into the fabric of the concerto so masterfully that by the end of the first movement, it becomes beautiful and comforting. So much for my amateur music criticism.
The two "Romances" are short pieces that are more traditional, and easier to like on first hearing.
As for Mutter's playing, perhaps ignorance on my part is bliss. Her rubato doesn't bother me, although there are a couple of places that I do wish she had called less attention to herself and let the music sing. Overall, a very satisfying listening experience.

Performance:  Sonics (MC):
Valery Gergiev's first recording of French music on the LSO Live label Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé, Boléro, Pavane - Gergiev was characterised by an unexpected affinity for this music and a warmth of expression not usually associated with this conductor. This follow-up issue confirms Gergiev's credentials as a Francophile conductor (as do his recent meticulous performances of the music of Henri Dutilleux at the Barbican).
This collection of three of Debussy's most popular orchestral works (taken from three separate concerts that took place between September 2009 and May 2010) opens with an absolutely ravishing and sensuous account of 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune'. The playing of the LSO is of the utmost refinement capped by the lovely performance of the long flute solo by principal flute Gareth Davies.
In contrast 'La Mer' is given an expansive performance of massive power and dynamic range. Some may question the way Gergiev broadens the tempo of 'De l'aube à midi sur la mer' (from 7' 50”) to a marked degree, but it here it sounds both natural and quite magical in providing a moment of stillness before the tumult of the final section's shattering climax.
The flecks of percussion and harp in 'Jeux de Vagues' emerge with remarkable clarity in a recording that allows every detail of Debussy's orchestration to be savoured, while the concluding movement 'Dialogue du vent et de la mer' has rarely been unleashed with such elemental force. A combination of tempo flexibility and firm control of dynamics makes Gergiev's exhilarating performance on this disc something rather special.
Debussy's most enigmatic, and many would argue finest orchestral work 'Jeux - poème dansé' was written in 1912 for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes and first staged in 1913. Though ostensibly about two girls and a boy searching for a lost tennis ball in a garden at dusk, the scenario has both sinister and erotic aspects that a good performance will illuminate. Nowadays Jeux is usually heard in the concert hall and on recordings, rather than in the theatre, where the subtlety and invention of Debussy's marvellous score can be fully appreciated. Gergiev allows the full virtuosity of his ever responsive orchestra to come into play with playing of absolute precision. Some impressionistic half-lights may be lacking, but this is more than made up for by the flexible yet precise orchestral playing and Gergiev's scrupulous attention to Debussy's extensive tempo indications.
When played at a realistic volume setting, the 5.0 DSD multi-channel recording emerges as one of the best that I have heard from LSO Live. Though close and brightly lit it does present a most convincing sound picture and a clarity rarely experienced in the concert hall.
Recommended.

The spectacular sounds of Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's masterpiece, 'Pictures at an Exhibition' truly are tailor made for Mercury's Living Presence sound and I was completely bowled over by the magnificence exuded by this superbly remastered disc...
...Two short Chopin pieces are also brilliantly played by Janis whilst Doráti's version of Pictures with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra needs no introduction to the seasoned audiophile. As already mentioned, the sound is absolutely mind boggling on all counts, with the Finale truly apocalyptic.
When I am faced with such discs, I really am at a loss at what to write, such is the perfection and beauty of the interpretations and recordings. As always in this Mercury series, notes and presentation are of the highest standards with the former also including reminiscence from the great Byron Janis himself. Great stuff then and if you have an SACD player, more power to your bugle!

Byron Janis
Antal Dorati
Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra

Great recording in both performance and sound. Interesting to notice, that both performances of the Pictures, the solo piano as well as the orchestra version are precisely 11.33 mins.
This said doesn't give a clue how much the two performances differ. The orchestral version is played very well, although I miss a little the last bit of power, that one can hear/feel in Reiners Living Stereo performance.
The solo piano treats several parts so differently than the orchestration does, that it was a brand new experience to listen to the Pictures in its original form. Very nice played by Byron Janis and the Piano sound is also perfectly captured.
This SA-CD gets full recommendation in sound and performance

Respighi's trilogy of flamboyant orchestral pieces, based upon his impressions of Rome in its many aspects, make a very satisfying one-disc programme. This work clearly has its origins in Smetana's Má Vlast (My Countryside). Each member of the trilogy (called 'Tone Poems' by Respighi) has four titled sections which are played without a break. Played in chronological order as here, they not only record Respighi's marvellous development of poetic and atmospheric orchestral techniques from 1916-1928 but also provide a pleasing narrative. Feste Romane (Roman Festivals), the last of the trilogy, was also the last of Respighi's pieces for full orchestra; he believed that he had taken orchestration in this particular style to its limits.
Reinforcing the obvious programmatic nature of this set, Respighi provided texts as forewords in each score, outlining his "sentiments and visions". These provide the general environment of the setting, time of day, even the prevailing weather and details such as passing cow herds and type of birdsong. Visions of the Eternal City's mythological and historical past are also evoked, such as naiads, tritons and even the Imperial Roman army. The ingenuity with which this Respighi's pictorialism is depicted in orchestral terms is remarkable; his scoring includes many additional instruments, such as a carillon, tubular bells, celeste, two harps, two pianos,an obbligato organ with 32' pipes and a mandolin. Famously, there is also a part for a singing Nightingale (even with its gramophone record number listed in the score!). BIS have replaced this with a modern digital version, but it is rather distant and fails to make its mark as usually expected - one of the few misjudgements in this recording.
Most unusual in the Trilogy's instrumentarium are six "Buccini" (which is Italian for a Roman horn, a reflexed tube a dozen feet long, not unlike the ancient "lur" from the Danish Bronze Age). The Buccina is only known from brief mentions in Roman texts or possible depictions in carvings. Although Respighi writes parts for three pairs at different pitches, there is no possibility that the real Buccina could play the composer's melody parts; they would have been restricted to a specific harmonic series, being of course valveless. Clearly this is a poetic device of Resphigi's to make conductors and players aware of his attempt to evoke the approach of the Roman Army. In fact, the score suggests pairs of "Flicorno" (Flugelhorns) at soprano and tenor pitches with euphoniums taking the bass part.
These tone poems are demanding works for both orchestra and conductor, not to mention for recording engineers. Indeed, despite the popularity of the music, there are relatively few recorded performances where everything comes together with dazzling success. This disc is one of them. Neschling and the SPSO have achieved a rapport during his period as directorship and principal conductorship from 1997-2009 which has clearly been demonstrated in their recent recordings, and the BIS team have had time to master the fine acoustics of the Sala São Paulo, so they capture the orchestra's sound with stunning concert-like realism and a formidably wide dynamic range.
From the ravishingly soft carpet of sound from muted strings and a timeless high violin harmonic at the opening of The Fountains of Rome to the almost orgiastic celebration of the Epiphany in the Piazza Navona at the end of the Trilogy, Neschling takes us on a gripping musical journey through the history of Rome, as compelling as the best I have heard. Every detail mentioned by Respighi in his programme notes is depicted intelligently and expertly by the orchestra, with marvellous transitions between animation and repose. The secure pacing and sheer tension of Respighi's ground-breaking extended climaxes are rendered with astonishing effect, particularly in the Pines of the Appian Way, where the unstoppable tread of the Roman army brings us the brazen conclusion of threat combined with triumphal grandeur. Here, as in the final climax of Roman Festivals, the extra brass gradually extend from the stage down the sides of the listening space to the rear speakers, a thrilling effect for those blessed with multichannel equipment.
This, therefore, is to my ears a very distinguished and coherent Roman Trilogy. Neschling draws together the individual tone poems in a way which almost makes it impossible to play them separately. In particular he finally lays to rest the dogma that "Roman Festivals" is an inferior work by lighting it up from within with loving character detail, rhythmic élan and orchestral splendour, so that it provides an inevitable conclusion to the Trilogy (a similar refurbishing has been recently presented by Pappano on RBCD).
A must-have for Respighi admirers and those who relish superb orchestral sound. Accompanied by attractive, appropriate artwork and an impeccable set of detailed programme notes by Jean-Pascal Vachon, what more could a collector want?

I listened to this multi-channel SACD in 5.0 surround sound. BIS does not use the .1 LFE channel, so no sub-woofer was used. I used a volume setting of -16db on my Denon AVR-3805 receiver, Denon DVD-3910 SACD player and my 5 speakers that are rated at overall 90db efficiency. This setting for me achieved live performance volume based on my live concert attendances in the seats behind the orchestra at Symphony Center in Chicago.
I was first struck by the Sao Paulo Hall's warm and rich sound character. In fact, from this recording I can tell it is one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the world. It's similar in sound to the Boston Symphonic Hall and the Musikverein in Vienna. The reverberation from Sao Paulo Hall (Sala São Paulo) is just about perfect at about 2 to 3 seconds which for me adds so much to the large space image and big emotions of this recording. These works by Respighi are among my most favorite and I have many recordings of them; Ozawa with BSO (CD), Tortelier with the Philharmonia (CD), De Waart with San Francisco(CD), Dutoit with Montreal(CD), Reiner with Chicago (SACD), and Que with Minnesota (HDCD). All have their strengths and weaknesses, but, the brass sound of this recording blends so beautifully together it is the most gorgeous, realistic and dark bronzy sounding I've heard on any SACD or CD. And when the building and climax came along on the Appian Way, my entire body was literally shaking and heaving from the incredibly inspiring emotion that this recording and performance stirred in my soul and tears started to flow from the overwhelming experience. I really wonder if they actually used original buccines (ancient trumpets) called for in the score as I've never heard the brass of Festivals and Pines sound this earthy before! The buccines are usually represented by modern flugelhorns and saxhorns. During the Pines of Rome and Festivals the brass come to you from the front AND rear channels which makes wonderful use of the multi-channel SACD format! Also, the trumpets did not hurt my ears even at loud volumes, like some of the other recordings do. Overall the recording has that you-are-there realism that SACD is famous for. John Neschling, the conductor, keeps a tight rein and controls the entire orchestra as if it were one. The natural sounding and elegant beauty of the quite passages in all three works is breathtaking. In fact, the musicianship of the orchestra is one of the best of all the recordings I have. For instance Dutoit's horns fumble slightly in places. Que's brass has a slight misstep during the finally of Pines. I could not find any fault in the Sao Paulo brass. Also, the performances from the winds of the Sao Paulo Symphony are superb and the strings sound lush. If I had to find a fault, it's with the recording engineer, the bass drum at the very end of the Appian Way could have used a little more impact as well as more volume for the 32' organ pedal notes during the Catacombs and the 32' pedal thumps depicting the ground trembling under the army's feet marching along the Appian Way. (Does the Sao Paulo Hall even have a 32' pipe? I researched this on the internet and could not even find out if the Sao Paulo Hall has a pipe organ in it at all.) It's really too bad that BIS has decided as a rule not to use the LFE .1 channel because here it could have been used to GREAT effect! But don't make too much of this criticism, the climaxes still make an incredable impact. In fact the finally of Pines is the best of all the recordings I have. If this doesn't win the Grammy than nothing should! Thank you BIS!

Together for the first time, three acclaimed concertos performed by the soloists who made them famous: dedicatees and performers David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovitch, and then Leonard Bernstein himself, in the Concerto Op.102. All were at the peaks of their careers. Bernstein plays as well as directs the second piano concerto, dedicated to Maxim, the composer's son, in a performance that helped further Dmitri's standing in the western world. The violin concerto is a live performance; all three enhanced by remastering in DSD technology and immortalised.

Adriano Banchieri (1568-1634) was a Bolognese monk. For many years he was organist of S. Michele in Bosco, Bologna. He was the first composer to publish liturgical organ music in response to the Caerimoniale Episcoporum, promulgated by Clement VIII in 1600. This response took the form of a manual for Organists – L’Organo suonarino. The manual immediately proved popular. It ran to three editions in Banchieri’s lifetime and the last was reissued posthumously. For all that, hardly any of it has been the subject of a modern edition. The main aim in choosing such a varied programme is to offer listeners an excursus through the evolution of both the language and forms used in keyboard music in both the Renaissance and Baroque periods. This highlights the many links between the various composers and their schools of composition, in a period of time, which spans almost two centuries, and an area, which covers much of Europe. Keyboard music developed in the Renaissance along several different lines: in keeping with church music, it took its material from Gregorian plainsong and polyphony. Both sacred and secular music could be tabulated i.e. re-configured for keyboard, so that where original motets or chansons had been used they could now be embellished using diminution, ornaments, elaborated passages, and other devices to make the most of the keyboard's own individual technique. In the same way dances as well as songs all came to be adapted for the keyboard whether their original sources were learned or secular. As well as these adaptations of instrumental and vocal music there were also forms written for the keyboard, such as the ricercare, fantasia, canzona, preludio, intonazione and toccata, all of which were characterised by their use of counterpoint, improvisation and sometimes a combination of the two together.

‘Consorts to the Organ' honours the celebrated English Renaissance composer William Lawes and includes a selection of the Five- and Six-Part sets, some versions of which are premiere recordings.  These works, the pinnacle of Lawes' achievement, challenged the musical rules of the day; his imagination and ingenuity created remarkable and enduring music.   Phantasm is joined for this recording by guest musician Daniel Hyde (organ).
Phantasm has been widely acclaimed for its previous recordings with Linn; its 2011 recording of William Byrd was named ‘Disc of the Month' by BBC Music and its 2009 Linn debut of music by John Ward was described as ‘stunning' by Gramophone.  Critics have described their performances and recordings as 'intoxicating', 'revelatory', 'electrifying', 'interpretations pervaded by a truly burning spirit'.
