I didn't expect to like this recording nearly as much as I do. Frankly, I will probably play it more than the classic Colin Davis Philips recording, re-mastered on Pentatone. The sound can be congested or incredibly clear with a grand sense of space. The SACD remake gives you the feel of being at a performance. There are moments that surpass the Davis recording. A very welcome find.
Recorded in 1969 I thought well, ok the sound will be of the time. It's much better than that. And I expect it might be even better if you have a surround sound system with a good subwoofer; it was recorded in a four track surround sound. I only have stereo. Some credit must be given to the Mormon Tabernacle, an acoustic marvel. You really can from the far end of the hall hear a pin drop at the podium without any amplification. It was the home of the Utah Symphony before they built Abravanel Hall. Yes, the recording does at times sounds dated but on the whole open and clear. When all the choir sings and the all the orchestra plays, Belioz wants to overwhelm and no microphone and speaker system can handle what Berlioz gives.
Yes, the Utah Symphony is not in the top tier (NY, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, SF) but at the time it ranked with Cincinatti, Detroit, and was at least as good as LA. I suspect it is not in the same league today.
Abravanel was a fine conductor, invited to conduct at the Met in 1936 (then the youngest ever to conduct there), and the Berlin and Paris operas. He fled the Nazis and was given a very free hand with what became the Utah Symphony. Google his recordings on Gramophone and you'll find a lot of positive reviews. So, don't roll your eyes about Utah. He came with a prickly but fine reputation and built the symphony into a fine orchestra. Listen. You'll like it.
The performance is wonderfully Romantic: excess oozes, floats, blasts, breaths and quiets. The Mormon Choir, then world famous, sounds good but Berlioz has written for a large choir and large choirs loose agility. On the other hand, they do the holy moments with true awe, bringing a chill. It's a fine, lively, throbbing, full-throated performance. Just listen to the way the final Amens breath and float. And the horn playing, the hand of death. Berlioz would be proud.
So to the Mahler, recorded 1974: Bernstein was not the only advocate of Mahler so was Abravanel before he was popular. Again, a very fine sense of depth and clarity mixed with some congestion. And then will pop out some brash clean sound. I'm not quite sure how the sound people did it but it get's your attention. It's a respectable recording. I prefer Bernstein's over-the-top, Boulez's surgical clarity or Abbado's most recent recordings, which are almost contemplative. However, Mahler collectors should pounce for the pioneer effort.
As I write, I put back on the Berlioz. It really is special.
